MLA Hong Kong office reopened

16 October 2024

In mid-September, MLA officially reopened its Hong Kong office after five years.

To celebrate, MLA hosted an event, with MLA General Manager, International Markets, Andrew Cox pleased to announce the office’s reopening. The plans to reopen the Hong Kong office had previously been delayed due to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, but were successfully resumed in 2024.

A new member joins the MLA team

To bolster the Hong Kong office, the Greater China Team has welcomed Oscar Ling as the new Business Development Manager. Beginning his professional journey in 2011 as a butchery apprentice in Hong Kong, Oscar honed his skills alongside seasoned butchers from Australia and New Zealand. His expertise expanded when he transitioned to a local trading firm, where he managed the procurement of chilled and frozen beef and lamb products. With a career dedicated to the Australian meat industry, Oscar is exceptionally equipped to contribute to the burgeoning market in Greater China.

Importance of the Hong Kong market

According to a report from PwC, Hong Kong ranks as China’s top city of “economic clout”1. Meat is the largest food category in terms of spending for Hong Kong consumers, with spending growth driven by higher expenditures on red meat and higher-value cuts.

The Greater Bay Area

The Greater Bay Area in China encompasses Hong Kong, Macao and Guangdong Province. This area boasts superior geographical conditions and a vast economic hinterland, making it one of the country's most significant strategic development areas.

In the future, the Greater Bay Area is planned to grow to become a vibrant, world-class urban agglomeration and provide essential support for the “Belt to Road” initiative alongside a demonstration zone for in-depth cooperation between the mainland, Hong Kong and Macao regions. The area is also set to become an international centre for technological innovation. By aiming to provide a high-quality living circle that is suitable for living, working and tourism, the area holds a strategic role in the nation’s overall development.
