Australian Beef Sustainability Framework seeks new Steering Group Chair

26 November 2024

The Australian Beef Sustainability Framework (ABSF) is calling for Expressions of Interest for the position of Chair of the Steering Group (SG), with current Chair, Mark Davie, set to conclude his term on 30 November 2024.

The ABSF is owned, developed, and led by industry through the peak industry bodies Cattle Australia, Australian Lot Feeders’ Association, and the Australian Meat Industry Council, with a vision of a thriving Australian beef industry that strives to continuously improve the wellbeing of people, animals and the environment.

It is overseen by an Advisory Board and led by the independent SG, while Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) provide resources, including the Secretariat, in support of the ABSF.

Outgoing Chair of the ABSF Mark Davie, said he was proud of what the ABSF had achieved over the past three years.

“The steering group has played a vital role in progressing the Australian Beef Sustainability Framework, and we’ve seen key improvements over the past few years. This has included a refresh of our indicators, consistently seeking out better data, and the announcement of the beef industry sustainability goals. It’s a great time for a new Chair to come on board, with the latest materiality assessment due for completion in early 2025,” Mr Davie said.

“The steering group and secretariat now sit within the MLA research, development and adoption business unit, allowing them to further prioritise key areas for research into beef sustainability measurement and improvement.

With greater linkage between what we measure and on the ground actions, I’m excited to see what a new Chair can bring to the ABSF.”

The ABSF has progressed significantly over recent years, and the new Chair will have an important role in continuing robust stakeholder consultation, while ensuring Australian beef’s sustainability credentials are recognised at a global level.
