NT producers to ‘BeefUp’ their businesses

Northern Territory beef producers can hear the latest regionally-relevant beef industry research and receive practical information to assist their businesses at Meat & Livestock Australia’s (MLA) BeefUp Forum this month.
The two-day Victoria River Research Station Field Day and BeefUp Forum will be held at the iconic research station, also known as Kidman Springs, on 15 and 16 August.
Hosted by MLA, the event is supported by the NT Department of Primary Industry and Resources, and the Katherine Producer Industry Advisory Committee (KPIAC), which is part of the North Australia Beef Research Council (NABRC).
Besides providing producers with information they can use to help boost on-farm productivity and profitability, the forums also seek direct input from producers to help drive the future direction of MLA’s levy-payer funded research, development and adoption programs.
Day one of the event runs from 9am to 6pm and will feature the following topics and presenters:
- Shruburn trial helps design a fire management program - Robyn Cowley
- Self-herding project for rangelands grazing systems - Dionne Walsh and Spud Thomas
- Senepol crossbreeding project update - Tim Schatz
- Ovarian scanning and data collection demonstration - Tim Schatz, David Johnstone and Whitney Dollemore
- Donkey project update - Neil McDonald
- Build production through reducing calf loss - Mike Reynolds, Kieren McCosker and Tim Schatz
- Post weaning heifer growth - Kieren McCosker
- The value of more kilograms on culled cows - Kieren McCosker
- Managing post-mortems - Elizabeth Stedman
- Research station tour
Day two runs from 8am to 1pm and will feature the following topics and presenters:
- MLA update - Ted Parish
- New developments in genetics and genomics - David Johnstone
- MLA priority setting - Barb Bishop
- Current and future state of the live export market - Ross Ainsworth
- Agri-tech in practice for northern beef production
- The power of using individual ID: evidence-based decision-making crush side - Robert Wyld
The cost to attend the event is $20 and includes morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, a barbecue dinner and breakfast. Registration is essential.
