Mentor program provides a career ‘Leg Up’

10 March 2017

Current or aspiring red meat industry professionals looking to carve out a career in the research, development and adoption (RD&A) field have a new opportunity to get a leg up in their career.

The aptly-titled A Leg Up program is being funded by Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) and delivered by Meridian Agriculture to provide ongoing workforce mentor support to individuals seeking career development and growth in the red meat industry.

It is one of 18 RD&A projects endorsed to receive MLA investment of producer levies for 2016/17, following extensive consultation with grassroots producers through MLA’s regional consultation and annual call process.

Interested individuals, as well as potential mentors, are being invited to submit an expression of interest in the project.

MLA’s General Manager – Research, Development and Innovation, Sean Starling, said the project would pair participants with an experienced industry professional who will act as their coach and advocate.

“This project will facilitate effective communication, enable skill transfer, and build a professional network to assist participants develop into the next generation of RD&A specialists to set goals and achieve them,” Mr Starling said.

“It will benefit the industry by encouraging and supporting individuals who are in the workforce, or workforce ready, to enter and remain in the sheepmeat and beef industries and working in RD&A.”

The project will engage a minimum of 20 new industry entrants and partner them with 20 established industry participants for 12 months. In addition to an initial face-to-face meeting and ongoing support, the program will include five professional development webinars.

Expressions of interest from potential participants and mentors must be received before 24 March, 2017.
