What’s in a trade?

18 October 2016

Beef prices are at record highs and although good, there is industry uncertainty about the ramifications for beef businesses and what producers should do going forward.

NSW More Beef from Pastures State Coordinator, John Francis, has focussed on this topic in recent presentations and a webinar delivered through the More Beef from Pastures program.

In the webinar, John demonstrates the effect of high beef prices on beef herd profitability and beef trading margins. He also illustrates some key issues for beef businesses looking at capitalising on the high prices.

John also looks at the flip side to good prices. The tough lessons learnt by the prime lamb industry are discussed and the 'cost of production' calculator used to consider how beef producers can maintain profitable margins.

These issues are also discussed in an article based on John’s presentation which recently appeared in The Weekly Times newspaper. This includes an interesting comparison of returns under prices which may have been received two years ago and today’s prices.
