Together with Japan

18 March 2016

On March 11, 2011, Japan was struck by the most powerful earthquake in its history. It hit off the eastern coastline and produced a devastating tsunami that caused an unprecedented multireactor meltdown at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant.

The disaster claimed almost 20,000 lives.

In this video, Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) outlines the activities undertaken to assist Japanese producers affected by the disaster.

Following the disaster, the Australian beef industry launched the “Together with Japan” initiative to help their Japanese counterparts in Tohoku. Firstly, the program deliverd on-the ground relief such as food supplies to evacuation centres and delivery of cattle feed to Tohoku producers, and then evolved into growing understanding between farmers in each country.

Most recently, MLA supported five Tohoku students to visit Australia and learn about Australian cattle production systems – to help build their knowledge, increase confidence about their future, and that of the Tohoku beef industry.
