1. Rolling out a new consultation model

MLA has implemented a new regional consultation framework for directing research, development and adoption investment for grassfed cattle and sheepmeat levies. Eighteen new research projects were supported and funded in the first year of the new model and applications are now invited for funding in 2017.

2. Setting direction with the MLA Strategic Plan 2016-2020

The Plan sets out the investment priorities which will contribute to the profitability, sustainability and global competitiveness of the red meat and livestock industry.

3. Delivering real R&D outcomes and new models for adoption

Check out MLA’s Annual Report 2015-16 to find out how MLA invested your levies in the red meat and livestock industry. Also in 2016, producers have been road testing Profitable Grazing Systems, a new MLA-funded program to mentor and support producers to improve business management and measurement.

4. Accelerating innovation

2016 saw MLA Donor Company manage its largest ever number of projects and attract new voluntary commercial investment to foster the prosperity of the red meat industry.

5. A plan for objective measurement

MLA announced at its recent AGM a revolutionary $150 million plan to install objective carcase measurement technology across the Australian red meat processing industry.

6. Rewarding eating quality excellence

The year got off to a good start with the inaugural Meat Standards Australia Excellence in Eating Quality Awards. Check out each of the state winners and hear how they ensure MSA compliance time after time.

7. Improving market information

Producers can now access regular and in-depth projections for cattle and sheep markets.

8. Award winning marketing campaigns

In the battle to keep beef and lamb top-of-mind in the domestic market, MLA again created attention grabbing campaigns, which kicked off with the much talked about Australia Day lamb campaign in January.

9. A digital value chain

MLA announced plans to accelerate the digital future of Australia’s red meat and livestock industry. The Digital Value Chain Strategy – an industry first – will empower every participant at every point in the value chain through data-driven commercial decision making.

10. Protecting and promoting genetic research

MLA is fighting two patent applications which threaten genetic advancements in Australia’s cattle industry. Also in 2016, MLA established a new National Livestock Genetics Consortium.
