Buffalo flies are now ranked as the costliest health issue in Australia’s northern cattle industries and are extending their range into southern production areas. They cause reductions in weight gain and milk production loss, decrease skin quality and have been suggested to disrupt mating and reduce ease of management through the substantial irritation caused by their bites. Lesions associated with buffalo fly infestation are also an important issue, causing rejection of cattle from some markets and decreased value in the saleyards.
