Agent responsibilities
Agents have legal, financial and ethical responsibilities for safe and humane transport of livestock under their care.
Where you are deemed the consignor or person in charge of the livestock you must:
- ensure livestock do not experience any undue pain or suffering while under your care
- ensure livestock are fit for the intended journey, particularly in drought, and a final inspection is undertaken; ’if in doubt leave it out.’
- not contribute to avoidable delays or insist upon unrealistic transport deadlines to meet saleyard or processor timeframes
- provide clear pick-up, contact numbers and delivery instructions and directions to transport operators
- make sure there is plenty of access for truck entry to the property and loading ramp at the yards to prevent unforeseen delays
- ensure livestock are prepared correctly, settled and ready to go at the arranged time
- ensure you provide correct weights and numbers to the transporter so the right truck is sent
- ensure ramp and infrastructure being used meet the minimum requirements
- ensure awareness and understanding of the Animal welfare standards and guidelines .
