Sowing for Success

Successful establishment of new pastures

Establishing a new pasture has significant up-front costs. This training package was developed to step producers through understanding and assessing the known and ‘hidden’ costs of pasture sowing. Participants will also learn techniques to improve the chances of the pasture sowing being a success and to ensure the pasture investment pays off.

What you will learn

  • the factors which impact on the current and potential productivity of a pasture
  • how to prepare a paddock for sowing
  • how to select the right species for your environment and grazing goals
  • which sowing technique is best for your situation
  • optimal pre- and post-sowing fertiliser applications, weed control and grazing management frameworks
  • monitoring and assessment techniques to evaluate the impact of the new pasture.

This package is delivered in five on-farm sessions and is designed to enable participants to work through the benefits and costs of sowing and to develop and implement a sowing plan. The focus is on building skills and confidence to objectively assess pastures to inform decisions about which possible action will align best with production goals and offer the best return on investment.

The training package will follow the progress of your pasture sowing, with paddock walks to discuss and practice assessment techniques and benchmarks to monitor progress.
