Phosphorus for Profit

Supplementation for peak cattle performance

Phosphorus deficiency is widespread across northern Australia but at a producer and property level there remains uncertainty about its magnitude and how to manage variations in deficiency between paddocks, classes of cattle, and at different times of the season. This training package starts with the basics and supports producers and managers to develop a sophisticated and targeted phosphorus (P) supplementation program which will deliver results.

What you will learn

  • which tests to take and when and how to test
  • the importance of balancing P with protein and energy
  • how to develop a P management plan for your herd
  • when to begin wet season supplementation
  • when to transition from a wet season to a dry season supplement
  • which supplement and delivery method is best for your situation.

This package is delivered via six sessions, with online sessions in between to support you in assessing P needs on your property.

You will learn how to evaluate productivity in your herd (by looking at fertility, mortality and average daily gain), how these compare with regional averages, and how to identify potential gains.

The trainer will guide you through testing for P deficiency and how to interpret the results. You will then establish a targeted supplementation program with decision making triggers that can be applied throughout the wet and dry seasons.
