Building Better Breeders

Fine-tuning beef breeding for optimum productivity

Aligning with a 12-month production cycle, this MLA Profitable Grazing Systems’ training package will teach you how to ‘join the dots’ to lift beef breeding efficiency. Through on-farm sessions and one-on-one coaching in a small group environment, you will learn what steps to take to improve cattle breeding performance.

What you will learn

  • the key steps to optimise fertility and reproduction
  • how to manage the joining and calving cycle for maximum productivity
  • how to best use captured and recorded data for improved decision making
  • best practice management strategies for animal health issues
  • how genetics can help you achieve your goals
  • how nutritional management can optimise feedbase utilisation for livestock production.

This package is delivered via six full-day, on-farm sessions with each producer receiving an additional one-on-one coaching session during a critical stage of the reproductive cycle.

Each session will include a theory component followed by a practical session – either in the yards or paddock of the host property. There will be plenty of time for group discussion and reflection.

By the end of the course you will have developed:

  • a breeding objective
  • a breeding management plan
  • a breeding management calendar.

Skills you will develop include:

  • data capture, recording and interpretation
  • pasture assessment
  • how to use management tools, such as a calving histogram.
