Grazing Fundamentals (Southern Rangelands) EDGE
Grazing Fundamentals (Southern Rangelands) EDGE is a one-day workshop that provides an introduction to animal production and grazing land management strategies in the southern pastoral zone.
The program is being developed for red meat producers with the SA Arid Lands Landscape Board, rangeland researchers and experienced rangeland advisors.
Attending this workshop will help you to:
- understand what drives animal production and options to manage this within your production system
- learn about the indicators of forage production and/or landscape function on your property and some of the options available to you to maintain or improve productivity
- identify points for key management decisions based on the environment, climate and livestock requirements.
What you will learn:
- the fundamentals of animal nutrition
- how arid and semi-arid ecosystems (climate, soils, and vegetation) function to produce forage available for grazing
- how the seasonal climate profile for your location can help identify decision points for stocking decisions
- the role of perennial plants (grasses and shrubs) in land condition and pasture stability
- the condition of land resources on your property
- the connection between land condition, pasture growth, animal production and long-term productivity goals
- safe utilisation levels, long-term carrying capacity and short-term carrying capacity
- the concept of tactical grazing and its application to improving land condition and productivity
- some approaches to managing total grazing pressure
- estimation of short-term carrying capacity through forage budgeting or other methods.
